Tennessee Tech continues to coordinate with the Centers for Disease Control, the Tennessee Department of Health, and the Upper Cumberland Regional Health Department to closely monitor the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Tennessee Tech has no reports of COVID-19 cases.

Academic Changes to Help Students

To better serve our students as they transition to online education, and to support their emotional and financial wellbeing, President Phil Oldham has approved the following changes related to classes for current Tech students:

Any undergraduate student with extenuating circumstances will be allowed to designate courses as Pass/Fail upon receiving proper documented consultation with an academic advisor. Requests for Pass/Fail can be submitted May 11 through May 17, 2020.

Academic advisors will provide students information on financial aid, veteran benefit implications, and progression to graduation implications, if any, of designating a course or courses as Pass/Fail. The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Affairs will support advisors and students with questions.

Extended deadline for dropping with “W”
Tech has extended the deadline to drop a class with a “W” to end of day, Wednesday, April 15.

No Spring/Summer Academic Suspension
Tech is eliminating Academic Suspension for all undergraduate students through the spring and summer terms.

Graduate School waives scores, extends deadlines
Graduate School Entrance Exams are NOT required for Summer and Fall 2020 applicants.  Applications for admission will be processed when all other documents are received (unofficial is acceptable).

Application Deadlines are extended.  Applications and documents will be processed immediately for summer or fall admission.

Summer Online Fee Waived
Tech is waiving its online fee for summer courses, with the exceptions of TN eCampus, College of Business Graduate Programs, and College of Nursing Online Graduate Programs. The waiver applies to the online fee of $128 per credit hour only on Tech online courses. All other maintenance, mandatory and specialized academic course fees apply.

Tech will continue support all students toward successful completion of all of their coursework this semester. The faculty and staff are committed to guiding and encouraging students through this time.

  • Are there any reported cases of COVID-19 at Tech?

    After the campus had gone to online classes and had a minimal campus population with most employees working from home, there have been two members of the Tech community who reported testing positive. The areas where these employees worked have been cleaned and disinfected, and any people they came in contact with have been notified.

  • What is Tech doing to prepare for and respond to COVID-19?

    • Starting Monday, March 30, all Tech classes will be online or alternate delivery classes instead of face-to-face classes.
    • Residence Halls will be closed during Spring Break, with the exception of international students, athletes with campus obligations, and students with housing insecurity or distance issues who applied for permission to remain in the residence halls during this period. Tech Village apartment residents are not being asked to leave at this time.
    • In order to facilitate the migration to online classes, Tech has
      • Tripled our Internet bandwidth
      • Expanded licenses for online education software
      • Created tutorial videos about online systems and scheduled training sessions for faculty members during the extended Spring Break
    • Faculty members are working with the head of their department on how each will be able to deliver the course content, attain learning outcomes, and allow students to complete the semester.
    • In order to help mitigate any potential spread of the virus, mass gatherings will be cancelled or postponed. A list of cancelled or postponed events is at
    • All official university related international travel is suspended indefinitely.
    • The university’s COVID-19 task force – with representatives from residential life, student affairs, academic affairs, media relations, food services and the president’s office  – will continue to work on the university’s response, with the goals of maintaining the safety and health of our students, faculty and staff a priority, as well as ensuring our students can complete the semester.

  • Why is Tech doing all this if there are no reported cases at around campus?

    Tennessee Tech has made the safety and health of our students, faculty and staff a priority in all conversations about our COVID-19 response. Our other planning goals have included ensuring our students can complete the semester. We also have a responsibility to the larger community to do our part with precautionary decisions and actions.

  • Is the university closed?

    No, the university is open to serve students and faculty, however many offices and service units have modified their hours and have significantly reduced the number of employees working onsite. You are encouraged to email or phone an office before coming to campus so you can make an appointment. Visit the Campus Services page for information on specific offices or services. (

    All intercollegiate athletic events have been cancelled for the remainder of the Spring semester. Formal practices are suspended until April 3. Hooper Eblen Center is closed to walkers until further notice.

  • How will I know what is going on?

    This page ( is the central place for information related to Tech’s COVID-19 response. The university also communicates through email from and social media channels. For specific groups, such as students in the residence halls or faculty members, they will receive additional emails from other university offices.

  • What does Tech advise campus members about personal international travel?

    Tech strongly encourages faculty to curtail personal international travel. If you chose to travel internationally, you are asked to contact the Provost’s Office, report the travel to your supervisor, and self-isolate for 14 days upon return. Students are advised to watch travel advisories closely and consider the consequences to their ability to return if the situation changes. When individuals return from international travel, they should follow any CDC-recommended guidelines. If they choose to go ahead with travel for personal reasons, and have trouble abroad or need to stay at home when they return, those are consequences that are the responsibility of the individuals.

  • What does Tech advise campus members about domestic travel?

    We ask that individuals also be mindful of domestic travel in light of the growing number of areas across the nation experiencing increased numbers of COVID-19 cases. Tennessee has confirmed cases of COVID-19 and, like other parts of the country, has declared a state of emergency to contain the virus. As of March 22, the state has taken extraordinary measures to enforce social distancing. Please stay at home and don’t travel unless it is a necessity. Check the latest advice from the CDC at

  • When should I seek medical help?

    Please call your primary health care provider or your Tennessee Tech Health Services if, in the past 14 days, you:

    • Have traveled to an affected area and have a fever and signs or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness (cough, shortness of breath), or
    • Were in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 and have a fever or signs or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness (cough, shortness of breath)

    When you call, please inform your primary health care provider or campus health services of your symptoms and recent travel or potential exposure before going to the health facility.

    Most cases of COVID-19 are mild and most people have recovered without issue. 

  • What if I don’t think I have coronavirus, but think I might have the flu or something else?

    Please do not come to campus if you are ill. Visit your healthcare professional. Faculty and staff will work with students so they can avoid falling behind in class. It will be helpful if you get a note or some documentation at your visit from your health care provider.
